Two Destinations, One Unforgettable Day

One of the great advantages of being based in Nice is how much you can explore with just a day trip. The French Riviera is compact, well-connected, and packed with extraordinary destinations within an hour's reach. Combining Èze — a medieval hilltop village perched 427 meters above the sea — with Monaco, the legendary principality a few kilometers further along the coast, makes for one of the most spectacular days out in all of Europe.

Morning: Èze Village

Begin your day early and head to Èze. This perched village (a village perché) clings dramatically to a rocky outcrop above the Mediterranean, offering views that are nothing short of breathtaking. The village itself is a well-preserved medieval labyrinth of stone-paved lanes, bougainvillea-draped archways, artisan galleries, and boutique shops.

At the very summit sits the Jardin d'Èze — a cactus garden built among the ruins of a medieval castle. The 360-degree panoramic view from here, stretching from Cap Ferrat to the Italian coast on a clear day, is one of the finest viewpoints on the entire Riviera. Entry to the garden is modest.

Allow 2–3 hours to properly explore Èze. Have a coffee at one of the small cafés in the village square before making your way down.

Getting to Èze from Nice

  • Bus 82: Departs from the port area and takes approximately 30 minutes to Èze Village. Affordable and scenic.
  • Car: Around 25 minutes via the stunning Moyenne Corniche road — a classic Riviera drive.
  • Train + hike: Take the train to Èze-sur-Mer station and hike up the Sentier Frédéric Nietzsche trail (about 45 minutes uphill). Nietzsche famously walked this path while writing Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

Afternoon: Monaco

From Èze, Monaco is just 15–20 minutes away by car or bus. This tiny sovereign city-state packs an extraordinary amount into its 2 square kilometers. Despite its reputation for exclusive wealth, many of Monaco's highlights are free to visit.

What to See in Monaco

  • Le Rocher (The Rock): The historic heart of Monaco — home to the Prince's Palace, the Cathedral (where Princess Grace is buried), and the Oceanographic Museum.
  • Casino de Monte-Carlo: Even if you don't gamble, the exterior and public areas of this Belle Époque masterpiece are worth seeing. The surrounding gardens are free to enjoy.
  • Port Hercule: Stroll along the harbor and admire the superyachts — a spectacle in itself.
  • Musée Océanographique: Founded by Prince Albert I, this is one of the finest aquariums in Europe, dramatically positioned at the cliff's edge.

Getting from Èze to Monaco

Bus 112 connects Èze Village to Monaco in approximately 20 minutes. Alternatively, if you've taken the train to Èze-sur-Mer, jump back on towards Monaco-Monte-Carlo station.

Where to Eat

For lunch, grab a snack in Èze village before heading to Monaco. In Monaco, the La Condamine market area offers more affordable dining options than the glamorous casino district. A simple croque monsieur or fresh pasta at a local café will satisfy without breaking the bank.

The Return to Nice

Regular trains run from Monaco-Monte-Carlo station back to Nice throughout the evening, with a journey time of around 25 minutes. The coastal rail line itself — hugging the cliff edge as it descends towards Nice — is one of the most scenic train journeys in Europe. It's a fitting end to an exceptional day.
